In Greek mythology, Alcestis was the wife of Admetus, King of Pherae. When Admetus was granted a boon by Apollo, he asked that he be allowed to avoid death. Apollo granted his wish, but on the condition that someone else should take Admetus' place when death came knocking at his door. When Admetus became seriously ill, no one was willing to take his place in death except for Alcestis who voluntarily died in his place. However, with the intervention of Apollo, Alcestis was eventually brought back to life. Alcestis therefore became a symbol of selfless devotion and sacrifice. The meaning of Alcestis can thus be seen as representing self-sacrifice, devotion, and loyalty.
